My name is Nick and I'm a sound designer and musician.
My work has been featured/performed in various forms of media and venues including games, films, animations, documentaries, galleries, museums, products, installations, applications and dance performances.
I'm self-employed and teach guitar, bass and music composition/production/sound design here in Edinburgh.
I hope this site can be a place to express myself, experiment with web technologies and sonic and visual arts, post assorted tutorials and scribblings, invite feedback, find future work and collaborators and link to the work of others that I find worthwhile.
This site is in its very early stages and is very much a work-in-progress - a result of my recent learnings and experiments with HTML/CSS/Javascript. I am trying to avoid using third party libraries/frameworks/templates and so on, although I have used three.js to display 3D graphics and the Web Audio API where I needed to add sound to the page in a more sophisticated way. Please excuse any jankiness as I try to work out how to get stuff working. Let me know if you have any problems or if you find any bugs!

Teaching Experience

I've been playing guitar and bass for over 25 years and teaching for around 15 years, as well as playing music in groups, recording and producing music for many years also.
I've taught an extremely diverse range of students various styles of guitar, bass and music production, ranging in age from 7 to 70+.
I also offer music technology support services locally. I have helped clients get to grips with a range of gear including software, interfaces, P.A., synthesizers, speakers and mixers. I'm extremely familiar with a wide variety of audio-related software packages, including Ableton Live, Logic, Reaper, FMOD and MAX/MSP. I have also used Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Reason, Wwise and Pure Data for various projects over the years. I also have some proficiency doing audio-related programming for the iOS platform using Swift.
My educational background: I studied a Foundation course at Leeds College of Art and Design, a BA(Hons) in Design and Art Direction at the MMU in Manchester and then an M(Sc) in Sound Design at the University of Edinburgh. I taught (and helped develop) a component of the M(Sc) Sound Design course at the University of Edinburgh (focussed on designing sound for games and other interactive environments/platforms) as well as supervising students undertaking group projects.
Tutoring Approach:
I offer a flexible approach that acknowledges that every student has unique abilities, experiences and requirements. Many students benefit from and enjoy not only learning songs and passing exams, but also learning about composing and producing their own music, improvising on the instrument, how it relates to other instruments in an ensemble or band and it's broader context in the world.
I'm punctual, professional and patient and very flexibly/reasonably priced. I teach both in-person (in the Edinburgh area) and online.
I try to help the student achieve the maximum benefit from their lesson time, as well as helping them to plan a solid schedule of practise between lessons.
I have an up-to-date PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) scheme certificate from Disclosure Scotland.
